What's happening,
boys & girls?
______________________________________________________________________________________________
9/1/10
Students are everywhere. Welcome to fall!
Upcoming stuff:
On Wednesday Sept. 15th at PA's Lounge (345 Somerville Ave, Union Sq.) 9p $7
The Doozer
UK gent who takes a gold-trimmed page from the majestic Incredible String Band in combining acoustic textures & instruments from far off lands with sweet, curlicued sing-song melodies. But there are also some cozy, staticky electric buzzes & odd bonks. His Siltbreeze lp 'Great Explorers' is just about to be released.
U.S. Girls
Dirty solo pedal overload & intimate singing from Philly's Megan Remy, & she's got a couple of Siltbreeze lps under her belt.
Peace, Loving
Peace Loving Take off your knee pads and grow some hair on your neuroglia, because these Whitehaus folks from JP are gonna rattle tree branches & walk barefoot until you crack open & float out of yourself.
Taps
Chris Strunk & Brendan Murray duo. Mr. Strunk actually runs our entire town & should probably run for mayor. He puts on more shows than adolescents have zits & plays drums with everything from hardcore bands to extended technique vocalists. Brendan Murray also has more gears than most: beautiful drones you can drown in, he's a sick funk dancer, & also makes percussion shimmer in pretty pop bands. Gonna pour like liquid gold between the two of 'em.
Rotten Apples
Rotten Apples Ryan, Paul & Keith all have a knack for utterly crazy epic adventures (ask about the acquisition of their ride "the Deuce" or wearing little girl's haltertops to family themed restaurants). Also, their band plays covers of Grateful Dead/Band/Laurel Canyon early 70s rock. And yet I only know this because they say so. All the songs are completely unintelligible and they often sound quite a lot like the Germs. Members of LA Drugs, Ganja & Debo Band.
On Friday Sept. 17th, Josh Jefferson (on sax) & me (Angela Sawyer, on electronics & vocals) will be playing a duo at Advent church. Also that night John Voigt, Matt Somalis, Liz Tonne, Tom Plsek & others. 30 Brimmer St., Charles stop on the subway. 8p.
The giant Grizzler band rears it's many heads at the Outpost on September 24th (186 1/2 Hampshire St. Inman Sq., across from the Hess station, 8p). 15 folks on a veritable army of instruments, and they're all making it up together as they go along. Also on the bill that eve will be Grizzler's leader Dave Gross (on sax) & clarinetist Krista Martynes.
Imperialisms is back at Rivergods on Tuesday Sept. 28th. These last few years, more & more of the information about 60s foreign language records gets transmitted by way of random videos on youtube, so it's about time that Imperialisms had a youtube edition. Crazy sounds & exotic places: tiny villages on archipelagos where they bonk rocks & sticks together, nightclub dancing in Bangkok, guitar wanking from the middle of the African desert, Brazilian pot smokers who worship soul 45s, and you'll be able to see & hear it all while you sip a well-made beer. Jesse Kaminsky (WMBR's Intercontinental) & Angela Sawyer, 9p-1a, 125 River St. Central Sq.
Finally, coming up Friday October 1st
at the Temple (670 Centre St Jamaica Plain above City Feed supermarket) 18+ $8 9p
Wolf Eyes/Richard Pinhas
If you're interested in screwed up & cruddy sounds, Wolf Eyes continues to be the premiere band in the United States, period. Mike Connelly's pinched shrieking, Nate Young's crashing low frequency synth swells, John Olson's long horns, home built electronics, sewing & spraypaint projects. They all add up to a pigpile of improvised scuzz that ranges all the way from delicate dovetailing to siren-screeching terror. Now they're collaborating with the guitarist from the 60s French band Heldon. Even before issuing a few prog/psych/synth records in the 70s, Pinhas hung out with Gilles Deleuze & taught for a year at the Univ of Paris VIII (the school formed in the wake of the '68 Paris riots). In recent years he's also put out records with Merzbow.
Jason Lescalleet
Jason sets fragile loops of tape on cranky old reel to reel machines, often stretching them in all different directions, recording and replaying as he goes, and running the whole thing through impossibly giant amps to develop a huge, enveloping maw. He's been playing around New England for more than ten years & has made records with Nmperign, Graham Lambkin, & Rrron Lessard as well as the huge solo slab 'The Pilgrim'.
Schurt Kwitters
Jess is normally the singer from Fat Worm of Error, and is one of the most accomplished (and underrated) squealers around. It's a very rare to see her play solo, and the sewing machine/organ contraption she's built makes an incredible fractured chitter chatter that you've got to experience to believe.
Vile Bodies
Everybody's favorite local drummer/booker/guy who makes everything happen, Chris Strunk pounds loose skins, while members of Conversions blast your face with charred, inside-out screams & spot-on hardcore riffage.

8/14/10
A few of you may notice that the bargain & used sections are no longer visible. Although there's a ton of it around, I've been refraining from listing used stuff on the website for the last year or so. That way people who live here in town can see something different that's NOT online when they come for a visit. Used stuff also goes in & out of the shop so fast that it's become really tough to keep up with! So, those sections of the site had been dying a slow, sad death, and I finally put 'em to rest.
8/1/10
Schedule is full to bursting as always!
On Saturday the 7th I'll be selling sides at the Somerville Rock & Roll Yard Sale in Union Square all afternoon. The fair runs from 3p-7p, and besides crates & crates of cheap vinyl, there are bands, crafts, DJs & so on. I'll have a bunch of stuff that hasn't been for sale in the shop, right out in front of the Independent on the bricks, and I'll gladly lend you my sunblock.
Tuesday August 10th at PA's Lounge (345 Somerville Ave Union Square, 9p, $7):
J. GRÄF
Baltimore lady who you've seen by way of Metalux or Harrius. In her spare time, Graf has been known to instigate elderly women with Alzheimer's to make electric guitar drone soundscapes, or whip up installations where music was controlled by meals that participants ordered from a spectacularly capricious waiter/conductor.
http://jennygrafsheppard.com/
Cereal
Don't miss the layered, quickly shifting stacks of off-balance horns from this local quartet. Jesse Kaminsky (who is one of Boston's best DJs over at WMBR when he isn't improvising jazz) on alto, Andrew Colwell on bass, Kelly Roberge on tenor, & Keiichi Hashimoto (who is, well, just kinda bonkers) on trumpet.
http://www.jessekaminsky.com/music/
Salamander Wool
Baltimore's Carson Garhart plays electronics, homemade string instruments, & sings to get at those lonely spots inside.
http://www.ehserecords.com/ehse015.html
Duck That
Steve Norton, Josh Jefferson & Angela Sawyer play hunting calls. Ever run headlong into a flock of birds just to see what they'd do?
http://www.myspace.com/duckthat
On Thursday August 12th, the Human Hairs will be gargling & hooting at Cowboy Country (off S. Huntington, drop a line if you need the exact address) with Drainolith from Montreal & Outerspace (members of Emeralds). 8p, donations.
The very next night Friday August 13th, the Hairs work up a second round of spittle & squeaks over at the Whitehaus in Jamaica Plain (around the corner from City Feed). Also playing that night are Ophibre, Dead Western, Gracious Calamity & Brian S. Ellis. 9ish, donations.
On Tuesday the 17th Duck That will be rolling out to Fitchburg, MA, former home of the inventor of the automatic machine gun, Hiram Maxim. We're playing at the Umbrella Gallery (639 Main st.), 8ish, & also on the bill are Dead Finks, Eric Dahlman, & Ry Ry of Tokyo.
Friday the 20th/Sat. 21st, I'll be playing solo as part of Weird Stalk Too, an all-night-long show at the Temple (672 Centre St, JP). Bands start at 8p & continue until 8 or 9am the next morning, & I'm on around 2am. Bring your PJs & enjoy.
Tuesday the 24th, Imperialisms (which has now been running for more than a year!) returns to Rivergods. From the pagri of the Punjab to the dastar of the Sikhs to the green turbans of the Hajji, the non la leaf hat of Vietnam, the alpine wool & feather cap of Bavaria, or the little black pillbox of Paris- we wear it all & will continue to bring you totally crazy exotic sounds from far off lands. Come & hear astounding records, drink lovely drinks, & see funny moving pictures on the walls. Hosted monthly by me & Jesse Kaminsky from WMBR's Intercontinental. 125 River St. Central Sq. 9p-1a.
7/1/10
Summer- ooh I'm glad that air conditioner works!
On Friday the 9th I'll be gargling solo as Preggy Peggy & the Lazy Babymakers at the new Flywheel space in Western Mass. Aaron Rosenbloom will be there too, and it's an art opening for paintings by Mystery Train's Josh Burkett. 8p 43 Main Street Easthampton, MA.
On Thursday the 15th the spitting, squeaking, yodeling Human Hairs will be part of a cassette batch release show for everybody's favorite new local tape label Ydlmier! Also that night, Steve Norton, Skinny Vinny, & Undeveloped Piles. 381 Congress Street loft, 9ish.
Friday the 23rd you'll wanna get here early & get a spot, as Bill Orcutt (Harry Pussy) will be on his way through town & doing some savage string strangling in the shop around 8p.
Tuesday the 27th, Imperialisms once again brings cravenly exotic foreign tongues to your doorstep. Jesse Kaminsky (from WMBR's renowned Intercontinental radio show) & I unearth the strangest of the strange. Thai country music, Colombian block party songs, Peruvian weed-smokers, Russian new wave, middle eastern belly dances, the rarest funk from Africa, and everything else that happens when hypnotic traditions thousands of years old meet cheap electric keyboards and fuzz guitar. Rivergods, 125 River St. Central Sq. 9p-1a
6/7/10
More stuff to add to the calendar, which is getting quite full.
On Thursday June 24th The Human Hairs (that's my garbling vocals duo with Saul Jacobowitz) makes it's re-entry into performing after a bit of a hiatus, mostly due to a giant bout of laziness that struck us. But we're back on track & playing at PAs Lounge with the Dick Panthers. 9pm, and we'll probably go on 1st.
On Friday June 25th, Hisham Mayet & Olivia Wyatt will be bringing the latest batch of Sublime Frequencies films to screen in person. They'll be in Chinatown, starting around 9, and if you need directions to the show or more details, just drop a line here.
I'll be gone for a couple of days this month (June 26th & 27th), but the shop will be open regular hours & Josh will be solving all my problems with his usual alacrity. Email responses might slow down a touch right around that time, so please be patient while I hurry back to my desk.
6/1/10
Plenty of fun times to be had this month!
On Thursday June 10th I'm giving a multimedia lecture as part of a local performance series called Rough Night. It's a survey of extended vocal techniques through the 20th century & is called 'Angela Sawyer Hears Voices'. Going down at the Lily Pad (1353 Cambridge St. Inman Sq.). There's a free cdr I'm giving away to attendees, and you'll hear a lot of squeaking, screeching, & squabbling on the eve itself as well. 8pm start.
Monday June 14th, my band of hunting call players, Duck That (Steve Norton/Josh Jefferson/Angela Sawyer), will be performing on KDVS radio, on a program called 'Phoning It In'. In real life, we'll be drinking heavily while we sit around Steve's dining room table, where there is still a land line. Archive & real time streams of the show will be available from KDVS.org.
Sunday June 20th, Duck That will be in Kittery Maine at the Sun Worship V festival. Buoy Gallery 2 Government St., 8p.
Monday June 21st I've decided that now that the Monday night series has been running for a year and a half or so, it'd been long enough that I could play it myself. So on my birthday, I'll be playing with Duck That here at the shop, for free. Cake, or some other gooey substance just like it, & drinks will be provided. 8p or so.
On Tuesday the 29th, Imperialisms has it's monthly night at Rivergods (125 River Street, Central Sq. Cambridge). Jesse Kaminsky (of WMBR's Intercontinental radio show) and I will be spinning the wildest 60s & 70s music from exotic locales: Pakistani psych, Nigerian highlife, Columbian cumbias, Peruvian garage & chicha, Javanese freakbeat, group sounds, ye-ye, proto-metal from the Philippines, loungey organ sleaze from tiny islands in the Mediterranean, Thai truck driving disco... There'll be videos & great food & drinks too. 9p-1a.
5/9/10
More upcoming events to add to the calendar. On Friday May 14th I'll be DJing in between sets at the Goethe-Institut Boston when Felix Kubin, Jessica Rylan & Keith Fullerton Whitman take to the stage. 170 Beacon Street, 8pm.
Also, on Friday the 21st, I'll be performing with Steve Norton (who plays with me in Duck That) at the BATV studios in Brookline (46 Tappan st, top floor). Also on the bill for the night will be Andy & Zeus, Peace Loving (from the Whitehaus), Spring Totems, & Rotten Apples (Franklin St./LA Drugs). Since Josh can't be there for a regular Duck lineup, Steve & I have decided to debut a synth battle instead.
5/1/10
This month I'll be performing on Saturday 5-8 as part of the Grizzler Big Band at Mobius Art Rages. It's being held at 175 Mclellan hwy in East Boston (near the Orient Heights T stop). Art Rages is Mobius' annual fundraiser, so all ticket proceeds go to keep the gallery running another year. Show starts at 8p.
On the 19th, I'll be performing & talking (about the shop, DJ stuff, & my bands) for a radio show called Citywide Blackout. It airs online & is run by a local newspaper guy named Max Bowen. Will have a link for you soon as it's up.
Tuesday May 25th, Imperialisms returns to Rivergods, a bar which I love dearly. They have great music, exceptionally good food, fine beer, and no TV! Jesse Kaminsky (WMBR's Intercontinental) & I will dig up & spin rare & exotic records in foreign languages for you. Wiggy Columbian organ players, wailing Indonesian rock guitarists, Burmese party bands, sped-up Alergian wedding music, Mongolian Beatles covers, and oh so much more. 9p-1a, and we'll put some wacky images on the walls to boot.
4/29/10
Last min announcement. Teenbeat recording star Jonny Cohen will be here on Saturday afternoon (5-1) to do some a capella singing & storytelling while you browse.
4/21/10
Editors of the Phoenix were kind enough to boast about the shop.

4/3/10
Linda Bullock made a really charming short film about the shop. You can see it on Vimeo.
4/1/10
You're probably already aware of the Series on Mondays, which just a way of saying that there's an instore performace here every Monday night. Once in a while though, there are performances at Weirdo that fall outside the usual schedule.
Fer instance, this month, Record Store Day is coming on Saturday April 17th. Here at the shop we'll be celebrating by giving away free tasty treats, extended hours, and not one but two performances: Keith Fullerton Whitman & Geoff Mullen will be blooping out around 5:30, and then Milo Jones'll be singing some sparkling & sweet bossa tunes around 8p.
On Tuesday the 21st, Elephant Micah & Mark Trecka will be at the shop at 8pm, for a special little set of acoustic guitar nibblings while they're in town.
On Tuesday the 27th, I'll be DJing with Jesse Kaminsky at Rivergods, as part of the ongoing monthly night Imperialisms. We'll be tickling your foreign tongue with the freakiest records we can find from faraway places. Listen for 60s psychedelia from Peru to Pakistan, crazy drum breaks from Benin to Bolivia, raging garage stompers from Gabon to the Gobi desert. And yes, all archipelagos, city-states & disputed territories are included. There's also lurid movies & fantastic food & drinks.
3/14/10
Last minute addition. Thursday the 18th, I'll be DJing for Miss Fairchild & the Justin Timberlake cover band the Timberfakes. It's happening at Great Scott (1222 Commonwealth Ave in Allston) and I'll be heating up the dancefloor with hard 60s & 70s funk spine-snappers meant to remind you why James Brown is the one & only godfather.
3/5/10
The Duck That show which was at the Cottage is now in an unfinished space above City Feed Supermarket at 672 Centre Street in JP. MUCH easier to get to!
3/1/10
Three different Duck That shows coming up in the next few weeks. If you're wondering, it's an improvised jazz trio with me, Steve Norton, & Josh Jefferson. We play reeds, electronics, & lots of hunting calls. Sounds like a lot of squabbling. We've got a couple of recordings just on the way out too, & will have 'em on hand:
Saturday the 13th, we'll be at Dan Shea's space the Cottage (65 East Cottage road in Dorchester; JFK T station, or go all the way to the end of Mass ave & then take a very hard left, call 857-413-0154 if you get lost). Also on this bill that night will be Mind Yeti, Rene Netherlands and Zun Zun Equi.
On Saturday the 20th, the Ducks will flap again at the 3rd annual Blastfest held at the YMCA in Central Sq. Cambridge, about two feet down the street from the shop here. Schedule is still pending, but last year was super intimate & I was really impressed by the variety of good stuffs the Whitehaus folks brought around.
Finally on Saturday the 24th, the Ducks will be at the Third Life Studio (33 Union Square, 8p) along with Lou Cohen (the septugenarian laptop player) & Xenia Pestova on toy piano.
In addition to all the quacking, there's another edition of Imperialisms coming this month.
Tuesday the 23rd, Jesse Kaminsky from (WMBR's Intercontinental) & I will be spinning atrociously rare 60s records from faraway places with no postal codes and hideously strange languages. You'll hear jovem guarda, GS, cumbia, highlife/afrobeat, Persian psychedelia, ye-ye, anatolian pop, & more. PLUS stuff from Southeast Asia, Ethiopia, Hungary, Scandinavia, etc. Sordid, fuzzy misinterpreations of rock & roll, videos, and there's great drinks & victuals too. Rivergods 9p-1a.
BONUS: In order to celebrate the continued wonderment that is Imperialisms, I'll be appearing on Jesse's very own Intercontinental show on Wednesday the 17th (6-8p, 88.1 fm or wmbr.org) to give you a little preview. I'll try real super hard not to play anything too sleazy over the airwaves, but no promises!
2/1/10
Many fine times coming down the pike this month. If you're unawares, Weirdo the storefront is just about to turn 1 year old, and so there's a party on Thursday the 4th (details below).
On Saturday the 6th, I'll be singing at the opening of Dennis Tyfus' art exhibition, all the way over in Rotterdam, Holland (De Player, more info at http://www.deplayer.nl/index.php?option=com_eventlist&func=details&did=195). That'll take some travelling (about which I'm awful excited!), but shop will be open regular hours thanks to some help from folks around town.
Saturday February 20th I'll be playing as part of the Grizzler Big Band at Third Life Studios (33 Union Sq. Somerville, 8pm). Also on the bill that night are Mike Bullock, Katt Hernandez & Phil James, Tim Feeney & Hillary Zipper.
Tuesday Feb. 23rd it's time for another installment of Imperialisms. The swank DJ night where Jesse Kaminsky (from WMBR's Intercontinental) & I spin disgustingly rare gems from the wild world of world psychedelia. Lurid, trashy & exploitative 60s records from Southeast Asia, South America, the Middle East, Oceania, all across Africa, Europe's breadbasket, the Far East, and many other spots you probably haven't thought about since 8th grade geography. There's also z-grade videos & tasty food & drink on hand. 9p-1a at Rivergods (125 River Street, Central Sq.).
Saturday Feb. 27th, I'll be playing in Lowell, MA as part of the X-Fest weekend. The festival includes music workshops (some of them for kids), pancake breakfasts, & tons upon tons upon tons of improvised performances. The whole thing runs out of the 119 Gallery (119 Chelmsford St) from 8p on the 26th until 5p on the 28th. My little slot is at 10pm with Al Margolis (laptop), Andrew Eisenberg (percussion), Jed Speare (laptop) & Rachel Rosner (dance).
In other news, the shop now has free Wifi. Just ask.
1/11/10
Yay!
Barring any last minute tornados, the shop's gonna make it a whole year. And it's really all the fault of Weirdo's customers, so why not throw everybody a party?
Thursday Feb. 4th
PA's Lounge
345 Somerville Ave
Union Square
Needy Visions
Bouyant singalong melodies about being down-at-the-heels in the shitburbs around Boston, played loose & with the sincere verve that you only get hanging around those shitburbs in the first place. Run by local booker Dan Shea, & the best possible addition to that distinguished line of New England songwriters that includes Jonathan Richman, Barry & the Remains.
Chris Corsano/Bill Nace/Greg Kelley
World class improvised percussion with breathtaking virtuosity, helped out by a couple of the area's best noiselords, savagely battering their respective guitar & trumpet.
Cotton Candy
Evelyn Hurley (Blast Off Country Style) & Mark Robinson (Teenbeat, Unrest) play pinkly perfect pop guaranteed to raise the curtain on your pearly whites, plus many songs turn out to be covers of commercial jingles.
Noise Nomads
Jeff Hartford makes crazyass tasmanian devil impersonations, rippling loud feedback, and has an uncanny ability to turn a room inside out. No other performer is like him.
dj John Funke
from WMBR's Backwoods, as well as regular Thursday night 60s 45 throwdowns at the Independent
starts at 9p sharp!
1/1/10
Happy new year. Couple of dates coming up this month. On Saturday the 23rd I'll be playing with the Grizzler big band as part of the Blasphemy & Benevolence series (381 Congress Street). I think there are almost 20 people in the band at this point, so it's always a party. On Satuday the 30th, my little game calls band with Josh Jefferson & Steve Norton, Duck That, will be playing at the Franklin Street house in Lower Allston with Cave Bears. Actually, it'll just be me & Steve, so we're going as 'Almost Duck That'. Since it's a house show, just drop a line if you need further details.
12/26/09
Happy boxing day. Got an Imperialisms coming up in just a few days. If you haven't heard, it's a DJ night dedicated to freaky, fuzzy, way out world psychedelia. I get help from the peerless record nut Jesse Kaminsky (of WMBR's Intercontinental). Afrobeat, Cumbia, Group Sounds, Yeh-Yeh, Anatolian pop, and way way more. Besides the intense sounds, there's also amazing food, drinks, & really sleazy movies from exotic locales. It's all going down at Rivergods, 125 River Street, Central Sq. on Tuesday 12-29, 9p-1a.
12/1/09
Xmastime is here. Don't forget that Weirdo has gift certificates. Imperialisms will be revving up just in time for New Year's this month, on Tuesday the 29th at Rivergods (9p-1a). If you haven't been, it's a jungle of world psychedelia (including mouthwatering obscurities from Indonesia, Thailand, India, Ecuador, Zambia, Brazil, Morocco, Nepal, Peru, & lots of points inbetween) DJed by Weirdo's owner Angela & WMBR's Jesse Kaminsky. There's also eurosleaze videos, and tasty food & drinks as a bonus.
10/30/09
Happy Halloween! Yep, Weirdo will be open all day on the 31st, and there'll be free treats for all.
As usual, there's a ton of stuff coming up.
On Sunday November 1st, Duck That (with Steve Norton & Josh Jefferson on reeds & game calls, plus me on electronics & game calls) will be playing at the Piano Factory with Eisen-Beast (Jules Vasylenko on reeds & Andrew Eisenberg on percussion) & Davindar Singh (reeds). It's part of the Fall of the House of Entropy series. The official Piano Factory address is 781 Tremont, but the entrance is actually the back door, which can be found down a small set of stairs off the parking lot at Columbia & Northampton. Just a block off Mass Ave.
On Sunday November 8th, Weirdo will be hawking sides at the Flywheel Record Fair (43 Main Street, old Easthampton Town Hall, in Western Mass.) from 10am-3pm. The Flywheel record fairs have been really lively the past couple of years, with some great rarities & bargains being passed around, and now the space is just about to re-open after a long hiatus, so it ought to be a perfectly celebratory day all around.
Thursday November 12th, Jesse Kaminsky (of WMBR's Intercontinental radio show) and I will present the next installation of Imperialisms, where we'll be spinning world psychedelia at Rivergods (125 River Street, Central Sq. Cambridge) from 9pm-1am. Listen to the wildest 60s & 70s music from exotic locales: Pakistani psych, Nigerian highlife, Columbian cumbias, Peruvian garage & chicha, Javanese freakbeat, group sounds, ye-ye, proto-metal from the Philippines, loungey organ sleaze from tiny islands in the Mediterranean, Thai truck driving disco... There'll be videos & great food & drinks too.
On Sunday November 15th, I'll be taking part in the latest concert by the heavyweight, elephantine, toppling Grizzler big band. At nearly 20 members, Grizzler is easily the biggest improvising ensemble in town, and the thing only keeps growing. Dave Gross, Polly Hanson, Steve Norton, Josh Jefferson, Jules Vasylenko, Lou Cohen, Forbes Graham, Noell Dorsey, Brendan Murray, and many many more. At the Piano Factory, right near the intersection of Columbia & Northampton streets, 1 block from Mass Ave. 8pm, and if you're late, a band member may steal your seat.
On Tuesday November 24th, my tiny hardcore band Exusamwa will be opening for Melt Banana & Captain Cutthroat at the Middle East downstairs. How will our very small band fill such a large space? Come & find out. Doors are at 8pm & advance tix are a wallet-gouging $12.
10/1/09
Lots of activity this October. First off, my band Exusamwa is going on tour from October 2nd til October 12th. Details below, or check exusamwa.com. Also, Weirdo will be heading off to hawk sides at the great WFMU record fair from Oct. 23rd to 25th. So that'll mean that some helpers (thank you Josh, Kris, Brandon & Denez!) will be taking over here & there while I run off to Chicago & NYC & back. Emails & product additions to the site will be a bit sporadic all month long, but packages will still go out in a timely manner & plenty of new stuff will be hitting the shelves. If you're looking for a particular item, just ask, as it's probably cluttering up a desk here already.
9/22/09

8/28/09
September at Weirdo:
On Wednesday the 2nd my band Exusamwa will be playing at Dan Shea's birthday party at his new space the Cottage (65 East Cottage road in Dorchester; JFK T station, or go all the way to the end of Mass ave & then take a very hard left). Show starts at 8p, & also features World Map plus a secret special guest band (hint: it's 2 guys named Brian).
On Wednesday the 23rd, I'll be a guest on WMBR as part of Jesse Kaminsky's Intercontinental radio show. Perhaps a face off of Southeast Asian psych obscurities will be in order?
Then on Tuesday the 29th, Jesse & I will bring you the 2nd installment of Imperialisms, a DJ night dedicated to the exotic world of foreign-language psychedelia at Rivergods (125 River Street, Central Square). There'll be eye-popping videos, completely sick dance grooves, fuzz whoppers & cocktails & munchies.
8/23/09
Last minute announcement: I'll be DJing at the Independent in Union Square this Thursday night from 10p-1a. Really psyched to be sharing the night with John Funke, one of my very favorite record hounds here in Boston & host of WMBR's 'Backwoods'.
8/12/09
Don't know if I remembered to mention it, but Weirdo will be open late this weekend on Friday, Sat. & Sun. in cohorts with Weirdstock. About 50 bands, and it's just a couple of doors down from the shop at the central square YMCA. How late? Well, it depends on the crowds, but you should feel free to stop by during the show.
7/29/09
Coming up in August, in just a couple of days Weirdo will be hawking wares at the Somerville Rock 'n' Roll Yard Sale (on Saturday the 1st) & hosting Graveyards on Sunday the 2nd. But there's more:
Both the Human Hairs (my sound poetry band with Saul Jacobowitz) & Duck That (my game calls band with Steve Norton & Josh Jefferson) will be playing as part of Weirdstock on the weekend of August 14-16th. Loads of bands there & it'll all be a pretty big tangle. It's all happening at the Cambridge YMCA (820 Mass Ave, Central Sq)
On Wednesday the 19th I'll be a guest DJ on WHRB's Record Hospital starting at 10pm courtesy of Catherine. You can hear it at 95.3fm or online .
And of course, the Series rolls on with a month of shows curated by Chris Strunk, go here for more.
7/25/09
Don't forget, besides the Graveyards instore next weekend, Weirdo will be selling at the Somerville Rock & Roll Yard Sale, held outdoors in Union Square, from 3-7pm on Saturday August 1st. Only thing that makes music better is combining it with sunshine, and there'll be plenty of both. Entertainment to be provided by Cotton Candy, The Mericans, Somerville Speakout & more.
7/23/09
Yep, Graveyards will be playing at Weirdo on the afternoon of Sunday, August 2nd. Shall we say 2pm? A perfect thing to do after brunch.
7/1/09
Coming up this month, Weirdo will be open on the 4th of July & providing free brewed refreshments to friendly visitors. Even though it's been raining in Boston for a solid month, we intend to celebrate as though summer's here.
On Sunday July 19th, my band Exusamwa will be playing as part of the 4-day Homegrown Psych Fest at the Church (69 Kilmarnock St. Fenway). Loads upon loads of wonderful bands.
Wednesday July 22nd, I'll be DJing jump blues, screamin' R&B & ragged proto-R&R with the gents from Primitive Sounds. Get your socks off & your jive on at Rivergods (25 River St. Central Sq.).
Couple of days later on Friday July 24th, Duck That will be heading out to Western Massachusetts to sputter on some game calls at Feeding Tube Records (150 Pleasant St. #235 Easthampton)
And then on Tuesday July 28th, I'll be back at Rivergods, where Jesse Kaminsky (of the amzing Intercontinental radio show on WMBR) & I will kick off an intermittent DJ night dedicated to world psychedelia. It's called 'Imperialisms', and we'll be playing lots of sordid fuzz & sleazy beat from faraway places whose names we can barely pronounce. Come & have some fine food & drink while we cater to your need for Afrobeat, Ye-Ye, Anatolian pop, Jovem Guarda, Persian Psych & lots more.
6/2/09
Two new little additions to kick off the summer. First off there's a nice little sale box here in the shop where you can get some brand new records at an extra deep discount. If stuff stays in the box too long, it'll disappear forever, so come get it fast.
Second of all, due to the serious time crimp caused by loads of records going in & out the door around here, there's now a new little section for records that are on hand, but haven't been properly written up yet. Check the list on the left to see the latest, & just drop a line if you see something you need.
Not too many shows apart from the regular weekly series this month, but I will be playing as part of the Grizzler tribute at John Voigt's 70s birthday on June 27th at Third Life in Union Square, 7pm. Voigt is one of this town's real gems, with a career stretching back to the late 60s. He's inspired countless kids to think more openly about music, & has watched not a few of them grow into elder statesmen as a result. Should be a lovely eve.
5/1/09
Regular Monday night performance series is going great. Already seen some fantastic shows & there's more on the way this month. You can hear & see what's coming, as well as what you missed by checking here.
On Sunday the 3rd I'll be DJing at Rivergods along with Our Little Rendezvous' Dinos. Planning on spinning lots of fuzz monstrosities & lounge zappers, possibly from countries whose names you can't pronounce, plus decidedly trippy videos, and Dinos' spectacular collection of garage 45s.
On Thursday May 7th my game calls band with Steve Norton & Josh Jeffersion, Duck That, will make a little trip up to Walter Wright's 119 Gallery in Lowell (119 Chelmsford Street, 8pm).
On Wednesday May 27th, Exusamwa will be heading out to Western Mass to visit the Phantom Brain Exchange at the Rendezvous (78 3rd Street, Turners Falls). Also appearing will be Chris Corsano & Abby Drake.
4-16-09
Just wanted to note that a last minute change means Flandrew Fleisenberg will be making some percussion claptrap at Weirdo this Saturday evening to help celebrate Record Store Day. Should be fun for all.
4-1-09
Ready? Set? Well get going, brother. Cause there's a truckload of events coming this month:
Thursday April 2nd
Oxfam Cafe (210 Packard Ave, Tufts University, 8pm, $8)
New Thrill Parade (San Fran)
Needy Visions (local booker extraordinaire Dan Shea)
Exusamwa (Angela from Weirdo, Doug from Fat Day, Nell from Goat of Arms, Neil from Ergot Rot)
Eli Kessler (Red Horse)
Friday April 3rd
Exusamwa will be performing on the Record Hospital's Dischord and Dynne program at 10pm. You can hear it at 95.3fm here in town or on whrb elsewhere.
Saturday April 4th
XOR Conference
Austin Hall at Harvard Law School (Just north of Harvard Yard, across from the Cambridge Common & next to the gym)
I'll be speaking about the history & future of vinyl at 5:30pm. A whole day of folks lecturing on esoteric topics like organizational systems for email and vhs tape collecting. It's free, and you can register here.
Friday April 10th
Harvard Advocate (21 South Street, Havard Sq. across JFK from the Dunkin Donuts)
Exusamwa will be playing as part of WHRB's Record Hospital Fest. About a zillion other bands are also playing, and you can read all about 'em here as things get knocked into shape.
Saturday April 11th
Frenchman & literary historian Jean Pierre Bobillot will be talking about the history of sound poetry (with examples, yessir) and doing a bit of gabberish reading at Weirdo at 7pm. It's all in celebration of his new book 'Poesie Sonore: Items of Historical Typology'. He's also appearing at the Pierre Menard Gallery & 119 Gallery on the 10th & 12th, respectively, so no excuses for missing!
Saturday April 19th
Weirdo will be celebrating Record Store Day with many small surprises. Stop by to get some free refreshments, little gifts & perhaps hear a live song or two once the sun goes down. Hours will also be expanded for the day from 10am to 11pm.
Saturday April 25th
Third Life Studios (33 Union Square)
I'll be playing as just one small voice in the resounding roar of the 15 member Grizzler big band, starting at 7pm.
Thursday April 30th
Bay State College (112 Commonwealth Ave., 5th floor, 8pm)
Exusamwa
Yea Kid & Big Static.
Also, starting in April there will be an instore EVERY Monday night at Weirdo. Dave Gross' series of improv performances is moving over from the Outpost, & there's a page for it here that'll grow with more details as they come along. First up will be Dave himself, along with Polly Hanson.
3/24/09
One last minute addition: This Friday the 27th I'll be playing with the behemoth Grizzler big band, now 15 members large, at Mobius. 725 Harrison Ave, which is 3 blocks after Tremont off Mass Ave in the South End. Show starts at 8pm.
3/1/09
Holy Donuts, it's been awfully busy around here lately. If you're one of the many, many, many folks who've come around to check out the shop, thanks for the visit & welcome. Also a great big thanks to the gents who've been helping Weirdo get work done: Josh, Jarrod & Eric. Hoping to have them around a lot more often in the near future to keep up with everything a bit better. Weirdo's been getting a ton of good press recently too, with articles in the Weekly Dig, Harvard Crimson, & Bostonist.
Coming up this month on Saturday March 7th my band Exusamwa will venture off to Brooklyn to play a birthday bash for our pal Mike, and then on Monday the 16th, we'll be at the Butcher Shoppe in Allston with Yawn Alms, Drekka & Dylan Ettinger (both from Indiana), & Night Moves (a Bob Seger cover band). Both are house shows, so drop an email here if you would like to attend & need directions. Mostly though, gonna hunker down in March & see if the website can be whipped back into shape after a couple of months of less attention than usual.
2/13/09
Happy Friday the 13th. The Weirdo opening party is currently looking to be very, very, very well attended. While I'm bowled over & pleased as punch to have so many folks wanting to attend, the store only physically holds about 15 people at once! So if you're planning to be here, please note that there may well be a line outside just like a disco club, and we may even have to resort to issuing numbers & asking people to take a break after a bit of a visit. We'll all be better buddies together afterwards, so here's to squish.
2/8/09
Much thanks to Sean over at the Some American blog for his writeup on Weirdo.
2/1/09
Coming this month at Weirdo:
Well in case you haven't heard, Weirdo's opening a storefront space, and the doors will be flung wide on Friday Feb. 6th. Love to have you stop by anytime, and those new hours will be (at least for the moment), 11am-9pm 7 days a week.
On Tuesday Feb. 10th at 7pm I'll be participating in an aesthetics discussion panel at the Axiom gallery along with the other members of the 15-person improvising ensemble The Grizzler (including Dave Gross, Polly Hanson, Brendan Murray, Steve Norton, Jay Sullivan, Lou Cohen, and many more). As with the other gallery events led by Jed Speare, it's liable to be full of fascinating abstract jousting.
Saturday Feb. 14th is Weirdo's opening party, here at 844 Mass. Ave in Central. Burnt Hills & Baby Jesus Burnout (Conrad Capistran from Sunburned & Tarp + Bob Fay from Sebadoh) will christen the walls with their stoner licks & there'll be beer & fun times for all. DJ Ning Nong promises to soothe with records between sets too. Starts early, by the way, at 7pm.
And on Saturday Feb. 21st at 8pm I'll be playing game calls along with Josh Jefferson & Steve Norton as Duck That at Third Life Studios (33 Union Square Somerville).
1/25/09
Moving is coming along nicely, though there's still loads left to do. Looks like the shop will be open for traipsing in about 2 more weeks, and if you're free here in town in the meantime, feel free to stop by for a little alphabetizing or sweeping. Official opening party will be on Saturday February 14th. Thanks much to Matt Parish for the write up on Weirdo in the local paper.
1/7/09
It's official. Weirdo will soon be opening a proper retail storefront at 844 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge. That's about halfway between the People's Republic bar & the Central Square YMCA. Can't tell you how pleased & lucky I feel to be opening a shop when so many others over the last few years have closed their doors. I don't know exactly when opening day is yet, but will holler when I do, and you can count on a grand opening party. In the meantime, many thanks to everyone who has bought their records here and all the wonderful saviors who've helped out behind the scenes!
Also, because I'll be moving about 10,000 records over the next few weeks, Weirdo will only be open BY APPOINTMENT until further notice. You can still reach the store by calling or emailing the regular contact info. Mail order will also continue, but may be slightly slower than the usual 24-48 hour turnaround rate. I will add as many titles as I can during the next few weeks, but the usual rate of 15 titles per day will be heavily curtailed. Please do rest assured that all the latest titles are still coming in, but you may need to drop a line or ask about them specifically. Don't hestitate to do so and speak up loud & fast, as I'm already a little overwhelmed.
Those who live in town & would like to help out with the crazy moving duties, I would be very grateful. There will be work for all comers with a beer and pizza reward on the 17th & 18th, as well as the 24th & 25th of January (Sat & Sun, both of them). Whether you have good wheels, a good back, a good head, or just good advice, it'd be sincerely appreciated if you'd like to lend it for a bit.
1/1/09
Not too many events coming this month, and it's a darned good thing, as Weirdo is putting together big plans to move into a proper retail space. Chickens are not hatched yet, & news will be here as soon as info is solid, but do rest assured that quiet time around here is never really all that quiet.
Meantime, I'll be playing as part of the Grizzler Big Band at the Outpost on Jan 7th. That's 186 1/2 Hampshire Street in Inman Sq. across from the Hess station, 8pm. The big band has somewhere between 10 & 15 members, is led by sax guy extraordinary Dave Gross, & includes Brendan Murray, Lou Cohen, Steve Norton, Polly Hanson, and several others I've forgotten on a ridiculous multitude of instruments.
12/1/08
This month at Weirdo, busy as ever:
The Human Hairs will be performing live on WMBR (88.1 FM in Boston & you can also listen online) tomorrow night, Dec. 2nd, at 9pm during the Pipeline program. Tune in for gargling & perhaps some non-answers to interview questions.
On Dec. 4th-6th, Weirdo will be selling lps & cds at Smash Palace, a weekend of improvised jazz, noise & rock performances taking place at the Central Square YMCA (820 Mass. Ave). The store will basically be moved to that location for the weekend, so if you're looking to come by the shop here, might be good to check the sched. Two of my bands (the Human Hairs & Moshi Moshi I Am the Decider) are also performing, and single day advance tickets will be available for purchase here until early on Thursday. Loads more info is available at Smash Palace
On Wednesday Dec. 10th I'll be playing with Steve Norton & Josh Jefferson in our new little project dedicated to playing game calls. It's called 'Duck That' & we're performing with Chris Strunk (drums) & Noel Dorsy (voice) at the Outpost (186 Hampshire Street, Inman Sq. across from the Hess station) at 8pm.
Tuesday December 16th, I'll be at the Outpost again.
This show has to cram 5 bands in, so it'll start at 7pm pronto:
JENNY GRAF
Weirdo other-world sounds from Baltimore, MD. You'd know Jenny from Metalux, Bride of No No. website
BILL NACE
Guitar wizzard of Western Mass who plays in Vampire Belt, X.O.4, Northampton Wools. website
ASCENSION
Dylan Hay of Idiotunderground. Nomadic student of blown speakers & busted electronics. website
ZERFALLT
Lee of Astronaught. Rotten brain-synth decomposition from Boston. website
EXUSAMWA
Doug from Fat Day, Nell from Goat of Arms, Neil from Ergot Rot & Angela from Weirdo, possibly inside a gingerbread house. website
On December 18th, Weirdo will be selling last minute Xmas gifts & neato records at the weekly Marsman/Jessy Drastic DJ night at the Church (69 Kilmarnock St. in the Fenway). To celebrate, they're renaming the night 'Christmas in the Underground' & will have DJs, vendors, a visit from Santa & loads of special treats. Bands include the Classic Ruins, Jessy & the Jingle Belles, & more. Plus there's a swank pool table & good drinks. To get there, take the Green line to Fenway. Walk against traffic up Park Drive (past Brookline Ave) for 3 blocks. Take a left onto Queensbury & take a left after 1 block onto Kilmarnock. The eve starts at 8pm.
11/11/08
Exusamwa (with Doug from Fat Day, Nell from Goat of Arms, & Neil from Ergot Rot, & me, Angela from Weirdo) is playing a series of 3 daytime guerilla outdoor shows on Saturday November 29th. We'll be under the bridge at Longwood & Riverway (near the Longwood subway stop) at 2pm, under the Boston University bridge at 2:45pm, & in the Somerville Ave. Sacramento street tunnel (right next door to Weirdo) at 3:30pm. There will also be a little afterparty at Weirdo. So get your mittens & get ready to jump up & down to warm up.
11/1/08
Coming up this month.
On Sunday November 16th Weirdo will be hawking lps & cds at the Somerville Rock & Roll Yard Sale at AS220 (115 Empire St.) in Providence, RI from noon til 5pm. It's an all day affair with music, arts & crafts, food & drinks, & admission is free.
Rock and Roll Yardsale's Myspace
and on facebook
On Tuesday November 18th Weirdo presents a show at PAs Lounge. 345 Somerville Ave. in Union Sq.
and it's on facebook
Paul Metzger plays inventive, elaborate ragas & long form improvs on his souped up 21-string banjo & a heavily modified fretless guitar. Working out of St. Paul MN, he has released several recordings in the past few years on the Archive, Roaratorio and Locust labels.
http://www.paulmetzger.net
Tim Kaiser is a Minnesota inventor of experimental electronic instruments, who has built over 150 contraptions ranging from wild effects boxes and circuit bent electronics to oscillators, keyboards and modified string instruments. He just released a record on Innova last year & will be demonstrating his fascinating gadgets.
http://www.timkaiser.org
The Epicureans are a trio of sax drums & bass who're the fount behind Boston's 2008 explosion of improv. Their effortless control & rapacious sense of texture has the town buzzing & scuttling just like their instruments.
http://www.myspace.com/therealepicureans
The Swas Nigs are a brand new trio who've been saving all their pent up psychedelic glory to dump on your head, featuring Tim Morse (Anal Cunt) on drums and Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records) on electronics, plus Dennis Stepp on a custom-created bagful of pedals.
10/27/08
Halloween candy is here, and Weirdo will be open on Halloween day & late on that night, so do stop by for some horror movies, strange alcoholic beverages, & chocolate. Wednesday 10-29 is looking like a good day to stuff a bunch of errands & record buying together, so will have to hold off on in-person visits for that day. Otherwise, it's business as usual 7 days a week 1-9.
10/22/08
Weirdo will be closed for in-person browsing for a couple of days to attend the WFMU record fair in NYC & play a few shows over the weekend. Should be open again for regular 1-9/7 day a week hours starting on Monday afternoon. Monday is already looking quite hectic, so if you're dying for a visit it might be a good idea to call or check the site that day too. Anyhow, we're rolling like, uh, thunder around here & will try to keep up with all requests. As always, even when we're closed, you can still use the site to buy stuff, put things on hold, listen to check stuff out, & so on. It's just that email response times will slow down quite a bit, & packages will go out in a few days instead of the usual 24-48 hours.
10/20/08
Just got word that the bill for the Human Hairs show at Mystery Train (Oct. 26th, 6pm) will include the trio of Paul Flaherty, Bill Nace & Thurston Moore, plus Ron Schniedermann (Sunburned, Spirit of Orr) & Andy Crespo (Barn Owl). Psyched to get back to Western Mass.
10/12/08
Chocolate Monk night tonight, and also this week:
10/10/08
Weirdo's having some problems with SQL injections at the moment (believe me when I tell you that you do not wanna know what those are). I'm working on fixing it as fast as I can, so please be patient. The site was down for a few hours today, and it's coming back up now. Still a bit shaky, but more solid by the minute. And the very helpful PJ in California is scrubbing away to make sure everything's spic & span as I write this.
10/4/08
So I know there are more than just a few of you out there who check up on Weirdo pretty much every day. If you also check blogs frequently (via an aggregator for example), you can now subscribe to the very latest Weirdo titles just like you would any other blog. To do so go here.
10/1/08
This month there's loads upon loads of stuff going on. Read all about it.
On Sunday October 5th, there'll be a make up date for last weekend's rained out JP Record Fair at Mark's house. 630 Center Street from 11-3. Mark's sales are where some of the hottest deals in town go down, so be sure and get there while the gettin's good.
Later that same night, Sunday October 5th, my band Exusamwa (with Doug from Fat Day, Nell from Goat of Arms, & Neil from Ergot Rot) will make it's debut at the Milky Way. 405 Center Street 9pm. Also on the bill is Streight Angular, and maybe (if their flight comes through) Japanther. There's bowling & excellent mixed drinks, plus a good restaurant upstairs, all of which make it worth the trip all the way out to Jamaica Plain.
On Sunday October 12th, the Human Hairs will be playing as part of Chocolate Monk Night at PAs Lounge. Also on the bill will be Usurper from Edinburgh, Maths Balance Volumes from Minnesota, Nackt Insecten from Glasgow, & Weyes Bluhd from Philly. All the bands are pals of/connected to label head Dylan Nyoukis in some form or another, so I thought it'd be a nice way to celebrate his peculiarly mangled existence. There are 5 bands on the bill, so the show will start PROMPTLY at 9pm. 345 Somerville Ave. in Union Square.
On Tuesday October 14th, I'll be a talking head at a panel discussion with Jed Speare, Bhob Rainey & Vic Rawlings at the Axiom Gallery in JP. The last panel discussion was a rousing success, and I'm hoping that regularity will breed even more high falutin' aesthetic dialogues. It all starts at 7pm, and the gallery is located inside the Green Street subway station on the orange line.
On Wednesday October 15th, I'll be playing as part of Dave Gross' Grizzler big band, a 10 person behemoth ensemble whipped up to help kick off a new weekly series dedicated to experimental music at the Outpost gallery. The Outpost is located at 186 1/2 Hampshire Street, in Inman Square across from the Hess station, and the evening begins at 7pm.
On Thursday October 23rd, the Human Hairs will be travelling to the Burnt Hills house in Albany, NY. Besides having a jammy time with Jackson & his extremely special brownies, Tom Carter will also make the scene.
On Friday & Saturday, October 24th & 25th, Weirdo will be hawking lps at the WFMU record fair. It's the biggest record convention in the USA, and always a slightly overwhelming but treasured crate digging experience. If you're planning to be at the fair, please do stop by our table & say hello!
On Sunday October 26th, the Human Hairs will be playing at Mystery Train in Amherst, MA. Now in their new location at 178A North Pleasant St. (just down the street from the old location). Can't wait to check in with Josh & co., and at the moment it looks like Paul Flaherty will also be on the bill.
9/27/08
Mark's record fair had to be postponed because of rain (bleh!). Instead it'll be taking place next Sunday Oct. 5th, still 11-3 at 630 Centre St. That's also the same day as Exusamwa's debut at the Milky Way, so I'll have a full day visiting JP.
9/22/08
Just in case you haven't been before, wanted to remind that the JP Record fair that's going on this Sunday the 28th will run from 11-3 at 630 Centre Street. Weirdo will have a table on the front lawn & I plan to be busily digging through all the other records there too.
9/16/08
Weirdo is now on facebook. You can become a fan of the store, read about hatching plans, and see what's been playing lately on Weirdo Radio.
9/11/08
Weirdo will be closed for a couple of days on September 12th & 13th while owner Angela heads for the wilds of New England to gather up more records. As always, you can still place an online order, just be aware that shipping may take an extra couple of days. The store will reopen at regular hours on Sunday Sept 14th.
9/10/08
Boy things are getting busy. On Sunday the 28th (in addition to DJing Rivergods in the evening as already mentioned), Weirdo will be selling at Mark's semi-annual Jamaica Plain record fair. It's a pretty low key affair held in his front yard on an irregular basis, but as every record hound in Boston knows, it's where some of the hottest deals in years go down. I'll post details as they become available.
9/9/08
After a few more glitches than I wanted, I upgraded Weirdo Radio to run through Shoutcast. It's still free, and it works a lot better.
9/4/08
Because of impending rain, the record fair this weekend has been moved from Saturday to Sunday. So that's now 3-7pm on the 7th in Union Square. Hope to see you there.
9/1/08
This month at Weirdo:
On Sat. Sept. 6th, Weirdo will be hawking some wares at the Somerville Rock 'n' Roll Yard Sale in Union Square from 3-7pm. That's only about 6 blocks from Weirdo HQ, so please consider it an invitation to our outdoor party. Lots of vendors with music, arts & crafts & so on.
On Saturday Sept. 27th, the Human Hairs will be playing as part of a mixed media event at the Channel Cafe (300 Summer Street, South Station). Also on tap will be music from James Coleman & Jorrit Dijkstra, as well as films from Doug Urbank, Vanessa Vartebedian & John Gayle. The Hairs have never played to a film before, much less multiple ones, so pretty psyched to see what'll happen.
The very next night on Sunday September 28th, Weirdo's owner Angela will be DJing at Rivergods (25 River Street, Central Square), alongside garage god Dinos from 'Our Little Rendezvous'. Look for an evening positively stuffed with wild fuzz, haunting melodies, psychedelic go go girls, eyepopping trippy videos & don't forget to partake of the establishment's fine food & brews.
The Bad Song Contest ended last night & the winner was handsomely rewarded with $50 in credit. Great big thanks to everyone who submitted a song, and perhaps we'll do it again next summer. You can check the page to hear all the entries for a while longer yet.
Finally, Weirdo Radio is up & running 24 hours a day. There are a few glitches & bumps here & there, and if lots of listeners partake then there might have to be a change to hardier streaming software, but for now there's about 450 hours of continuous streaming music.
8/8/08
Here's a bit more detail on that talking head event coming up:
8/1/08
This month at Weirdo:
Tuesday August 12th, 9pm
PA's Lounge
345 Somerville Ave. Union Square
US Girls
Dirty solo pedal overload & clanging from Chicago's Megan Remy, who's just about to have an lp released on Siltbreeze.
Baba Yaga
The loveliest ladies in New England, Amanda & Carla, with their sweetheart & fragile folk stylings.
Coughing Club
Angela from Weirdo holds ukulele & makes funny noises.
Milo Jones
Suave gent about town who plays guitar & sings like a dream.
Also this month, I'll be a talking head along with Susanna Bolle, Brendan Murray & a few other folks at the Axiom gallery for a panel discussion that Jed Speare is setting up for August 19th. Details are still forthcoming, but it should be an interesting evening. My topic: 'The aesthetic assumptions behind contemporary experimental music.' Can't wait to get high falutin' on y'all.
Finally, if you haven't checked lately, the Bad Song Contest & Fish Stalls pages here at Weirdo are getting pretty frequent updates. Only 1 month left in the song contest, so get your submissions in soon.
7/1/08
Upcoming this month, my band the Human Hairs will be playing along with the James Coleman/Lou Cohen duo & Max Lord at the Piano Craft Guild (791 Tremont Street, South End off Mass. Ave.) on Tuesday July 8th.
Also, on Saturday July 19th, Weirdo will have a table at the indieArts festival in Providence, RI from 1-11pm (2 Kennedy Plaza). Slated stuff includes 3 stages with about 15 bands, a DJ booth, microbrewery stands, food, clothes & jewlery, & even a 'best facial hair' contest.
6/13/08
Weirdo has two new sections that are sortof like blogs. 5 years later than everyone else on the planet, I finally learned what an RSS is & decided to put my newfound discoveries to good use. So please enter the Bad Song Contest and check out some cassettes on Fish Stalls in the Pearl River Delta
6/2/08
This month Weirdo will be closing briefly for a much-needed, long-awaited vacation/record shopping trip from 6-18 until 6-23. You're welcome to place an order online or email during that time, but responses will be a little slower & packages will go out in 3-4 days instead of the normal 24-48 hours. We'll be open at the full 7 day schedule beforehand of course & then again starting 6-24.
Also coming up this month on Monday June 30th, Weirdo presents at PAs Lounge (345 Somerville Ave. Union Square):
Warmer Milks dusky & shambling improvised tangle from loose collective outta Lexington, KY
Fat Worm of Error Western Mass. squiggly & yelping 10-armed monster with one roller skate falls about the place & hurts ears
Baba Yaga haunting & spare folk on guitar, mandolin, & autoharp from the undeniably gorgeous Amanda & Carla
Human Hairs mucus, spittle, & yowling mixemups from Saul & Angela
5/20/08
You may've heard that US postage rates went up May 12th. Weirdo offers the lowest postage rates of any record store on the entire planet, and although we'll have to raise our rates very slightly, we certainly intend to continue to trip the lights fantastic in this department. The process of changing rates will take a day or two, so you've got a window to get some hold stashes cleaned out or get in that extra smidgen of bargain.
5/7/08
So Weirdo hours are changing and we're now open 7 days a week (hurrah!) from 1pm-9pm. Not sure exactly how long they'll stay that way (your pal Angela may run out of dough & have to cut back), but certainly until further notice. Keep your eye on this page, or sign up for our email list for all kindsa good news. Also, although it's not guaranteed, we're often open later than 9, so look for our little blue neon open sign.
5/1/08
This month Weirdo will be going on the road to hawk our wares at the No Fun Fest from May 16th-18th. Things will be slow on the website that whole week (12th-19th), and there won't be many titles added or an email sent out. While you're still welcome to place orders, they may take a couple of extra days to be packed off as opposed to the usual 24-48 hours. If you're planning to be at No Fun, please do stop by the table for a chat.

One last show, super last minute. The debut of the Sun Shine Sanitarium (that's me with Shana from Child Bride) was derailed temporarily, but now we'll be playing at the International Noise Conference this Thursday the 24th. That's at the Wong Auditorium on MIT Campus, 70 Memorial Dr. Building E51 Room 115. Whole thing starts at 7pm.
