The mostly immigrant & entirely displaced underclass of Athens, Piraeus & Thessaloniki played songs that were a cross-cultural hodgepodge of influences from all over Asia Minor & even as far afield as India, Arabia, or America. Hash dens, bars, jails & gutters were always the setting & whether proclaiming the charms of drugs or the slings & sorrows of a life in poverty, pride of community was always the point of performing. Follow the trail of smoke on mini-saz, guitar, bouzouki, violin, accordion, cimbalom, & more, with tons of slow but virtuostic solos & small ensemble backdrops. Liners (which have tons of pix, lyric translations, & even a glossary) make note of the fact that many fans of the genre don't like the name 'rembetika' (and sweet jesus how they like to argue over the spelling!), because the musicians & tunes are often Turkish, Armenian, etc. rather than strictly Greek. Tracklisting: Jack Gregory-The Mystery, Yiogrios Katsaraos-I Creep Along the Walls, Spahanis-Oh Mother I Can't Stand It, Andonis Dalgas-Dou Dou, Fr. Zouridakis/D. Tsakiris-The Dachtiri, Harilaos Piperakis/Ep. Asimakopoulous-The Toust, Kostas Roukounas-I Wasted My Youth, Markos Mamvakaris-The Lifer, Andonis Papadzis-The Bohoris, K.
